찜통 더위 속에서 감행한 Met Breuer에서의 오랜만의 artist date. 날씨에도 불구하고 가길 정말 잘했다. 인상적이었던 작품 몇 개.
Tatsuo Miyajima: Arrow of Time(Unfinished Life)
Informed by his study of Buddhist philosophy and modern physics, Miyajima's work is premised on the concept of infinity. For the artist, infinity implies not only relentless flux - permanent impermanence, in other words - but also endlessness, whether spatial, temporal, or existential. Arrow of Time(Unfinished Life), created for the exhibition "Unfinished: Thoughts Left Visible," takes its title from a concept popularized by British astronomer Arthur Stanley Eddington in the late 1920s. Following Eddington, "time's arrow" describes the irreversibility of time, the very concept that Miyajima's installation enacts through its use of approximately 250 digital light emitting LED counters. The artist has programmed these devices to count from 1 to 9, at which point they go dark momentarily, before beginning the sequence again. According to Miyajima, the cyclical repetition of numbers, along with the recurring passage from light to dark, symbolizes the unending "time of human life." This idea is called "Samsara" in Buddhist metaphysics, which refers to the ongoing cycle of birth and death. Each of the LED lights is programmed to count at different speeds, variations that Miyajima intends to represent the nearly limitless differences between human beings. Hanging from the ceiling of the gallery, these digital counters immerse viewers in a shower of light symbolizing both time and life.
이 작품의 진가는 정지되어 있는 순간에 주는 시각적 효과가 아닌 시간의 흐름 속의 시공간적인 변화에 있다. 가만히 서서 올려다 보면 각 불빛이 저마다의 속도로 9를 향해 간다. 그러고는 어느 순간 깜박. 한 불빛이 나간다. 그러다가 또 깜박. 다른 구석에서는 또 하나가 켜진다. 조용한 깜박임 속에서 무한하게 다른 인생들이 시작하고 끝을 맺는다. 삶과 죽음의 순환은 끊임없는 고리로 이어진다. 1600년대부터 2001년 9/11테러에 걸쳐서 뉴욕에 사는 다양한 인물들의 삶을 묘사한 Edward Rutherfurd의 New York, 그리고 패티 스미스가 6-70년대 뉴욕에서 예술가로서 자기 목소리를 찾는 과정을 그린 Just Kids을 읽고 있어선지 시간/역사에 대한 생각이 많은 요즘에 반가운 작품이었다.
Diane Arbus: Young man with bag smiling(?) (Coney Island)
안타깝게도 인터넷에서 이미지를 찾을 수 없다. Diane Arbus는 사회 언저리에 놓인 사람들 drag queen, 코니 아일랜드의 freak 등을 작업대상으로 많이 삼고 그것으로 많이 알려져 있는 사진작가다. 하지만 내 관심은 카메라에 미소를 지어보인 젊은 청년의 사진에 머물렀다. 수줍어보이면서도 삶에 대한 어떤 만족감을 비친 그 미소가 좋았다. 그 사진이 1958년인가에 찍힌 거니까 그 당시 스무살이었다고 생각하면 지금은 여든에 가까운 할아버지겠지? 이 청년이 살았을 법한 인생을 상상해본다. 재미난 인생이었으면 좋겠다.
